Bhavna Shamasunder

Biography:

Professor Shamasunder teaches and conducts research on health and environmental justice, focusing on the disproportionate pollution burdens experienced by urban communities of colors. Her research focuses on  the consequences of neighborhoods near urban oil drilling sites in Los Angeles and how consumer product marketing and use of beauty care products may contribute to the chemical exposures for women of color.

Current Project:

One study examines the health impacts of urban oil drilling in Los Angeles, while the Taking Stock Study investigates chemical exposures faced by communities of color through consumer and personal care products. Student researchers will support community-engaged work by helping connect with partner organizations, synthesizing survey and interview data, assisting with participant meetings, and translating scientific findings for residents.

Skills: Spanish bilingual communication, statistical analysis (including R or similar programs), and GIS-based storytelling are highly valuable. Above all, an interest in community centered research and environmental health.
