Highlights From the 2025 UC Summit Leadership Conference
This year's Virtual UC Summit Leadership Conference brought together students, faculty, and leaders across from the University of California to discuss equity, leadership, and future of Latinx communities in higher education.
Inspiring Paths in Latino Education and Achievement
Dr. Frances Contreras, Dean of the UC Irvine School of Education, presented data on Latino Socioeconomic and educational accomplishments and ongoing challenges across the United States. Her research highlighted progress Latino students have made and the systemic barriers that continue to shape their experiences.
Jose M. Hernandez shared his inspiring journey from being a migrant farmworker and a student to becoming a NASA astronaut. Hernandez emphasized perseverance, education, and believing in one's potential/ He recalled the moment he learned he had been selected by NASA, exclaiming: "Orale! NASA thinks I can be an astronaut!" His story resonated with attendees, serving as a reminder that leadership begins with resilience and the courage to pursue what once felt impossible.

The Summit created a space for meaningful conversations and reflection. Participants connected with role models, learned from UC leaders, and engaged with challenges impacting Latino students and families across California. The event highlighted leadership in all areas, from academia to a personal level. Thus emphasizing the impact of representation on the younger scholars and leaders.
