Luis Leal Award for Distinction in Chicano/Latino Literature

Abstract

The 15th Annual Luis Leal Award for Distinction in Chicano/Latino Literature will be presented to Tim Hernandez. Hernandez is a major new writer who has achieved national and international recognition.  He has published three books of fiction.  These include "Manana Means Heaven" published in 2013; "All They Will Call You" published in 2017; and  a book of short stories, "Breathing, In Dust" published in 2016.  All three volumes have received highly positive reviews.  Hernandez is also an accomplished poet with three books of poetry.  For his work, he has received numerous awards and honors.  These include the 2014 International Latino Book Award; the 2014 Colorado Book Award for Poetry; the 2011 New American Poets Award; the 2010 Premio Aztlan Literary Prize by the National Hispanic Cultural Center; the 2006 American Book Award in Poetry; and the 2003 James Duval Phelan Award for hybrid manuscripts by the San Francisco Foundation. Hernandez is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the Univ. of Texas at El Paso.

The Leal Award will take place on Oct. 24 at 4 PM in the McCune Room of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center.  The event is free and open to the public!
